Notes:

Article 370 conferred on J&K the power to have a separate constitution, a state flag, and autonomy of internal administration.

Article 35A: It empowered the Jammu and Kashmir state’s legislature to define “permanent residents” of the state and provide special rights and privileges to them.

Constitution (Application to Jammu and Kashmir) Order, 2019 made provisions of the Indian constitution applicable in the state of J&K. All provisions which separated the Constitution of J&K were abrogated (35A was automatically scrapped).

J&K reorganization Act, 2019 reorganized two UTs – J&K (with legislature) and Ladakh (without Legislature)

J&K cannot maintain a separate flag, Ranbir Penal Code replaced with IPC, all the provisions of the Indian Constitution now automatically apply to J&K as well.

Notes:

The Ratle Hydroelectric Project is a run of the river dam project being constructed on the Chenab River in Kishtwar district of J&K. It has a 133 m high gravity dam.

The Kishanganga Hydroelectric Project is another run of the river project in Jammu and Kashmir. It is located on the Kishanganga River in the Jhelum River basin.

The Ramganga Dam in Uttarakhand is part of a multi-purpose project for irrigation and hydroelectric power generation. It is located on the Ramganga River in Jim Corbett National Park.

Bhakra Dam is located on the Sutlej River in Himachal Pradesh. It forms the 3rd largest reservoir in India, Govind Sagar reservoir.

Notes:

Operation All Out: It was launched in Jammu and Kashmir in 2017 to flush out terrorists in the region. It is an ongoing operation.

Operation Sunrise: It is a joint operation of India and Myanmar. It targeted militant groups in Nagaland, Manipur and Assam.

Operation Rakshak: It is an ongoing counter insurgency operation. It was launched in Jammu and Kashmir in 1990.

Operation Bajrang: It was launched against the separatist groups of Assam in 1990. 

Operation All Clear: It was launched by the Bhutan Army in 2003. India provided logistical support to the operation. It was launched against NDFB (National Democratic Front of Bodoland) and KLO (Kamatapur Liberation Organisation).

Notes:

The Department of Science & Technology (DST), Govt of India will set up India’s first-ever “Night Sky Sanctuary” in Ladakh. It is being set up by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research under Union Ministry of Science & Technology.

The proposed Dark Sky Reserve will be located at Hanle in Ladakh as a part of Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary.

It will be one of the world’s highest-located sites for optical, infra-red, and gamma-ray telescopes.

CSIR is also promoting “Leh Berry” which is an exclusive food product of the cold desert.

Ladakh is celebrating Losar Festival on December 24, to mark the Ladakhi New Year. The Losar festivities continue for nine more days from the new year.

This is the major socio-religious festival of Ladakh celebrated in winter. The New Year is welcomed with dough Models of Ibex Sun and Moon and flour-painted lucky signs on the walls of the kitchen.

Occurrence of a spiral-headed copper ‘hairpin’ at Gufkral and a Kot Diji-type ‘homed deity design’ on a globular pot at Burzahom.

The aceramic phase at Gufkral showed large and small dwelling pits. Shallow and large pits are said to be more common in its earlier phase. There are examples of pits with two chambers in the later phase.

Handmade grey pottery with a mat-impressed base is a distinguishing feature of the ceramic phase of the Kashmir Neolithic at both its excavated sites—Gufkral and Burzahom.

The Neolithic phase in Kashmir merged into a Megalithic phase around the middle of the second millennium BC.

Kashmiri Saivism is a monistic system, also called the Trika (‘three-fold’) system expounded in Kashmir by Abhinava Gupta (993-1015 AD) who based his exposition on the teachings of earlier sages.

He composed a number of commentaries on the now lost Sivadrishti of Somananda, from whom he was fourth in succession. Fortunately, a summary of this work was composed by Utpala, a pupil of Abhinava, entitled the Pratmhhijna Sutras.

However, the earliest teacher was Vasugupta who lived in the 9th century and founded the Pratyahhijna school. He taught that the soul gains knowledge by means of intense yogic meditation.

The name Trika refers to the three-fold scripture drawn from the noncanonical Agamas. The system was influenced by Samkhya, Advaita Vedanta and Pancharatra doctrines.

Ladakh’s wood carving has been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag.

Last year, the government granted GI Tag for Raktsey Karpo apricot of Ladakh, first ever GI tag for Ladakh.

In Tamil Nadu, the Karuppur kalamkari paintings and the Kallakurichi wood carvings received the geographical indication (GI) tags in 2021.

The red cherry pepper chilli of Sikkim which is locally known as the “Dalle Khursani” got the geographical indication tag.
