Shivappa Nayaka, who ruled from 1645–1660, ousted the Portuguese from the west coast. The Keladi Nayakas were successors of the Vijayanagara Empire in the coastal and Malnad (hill) districts of Karnataka, India.

Shivappa Nayaka captured all the Portuguese fortresses in the 1650s, including Mangalore. He also captured the ports of Gangoli, Barcelor, Honavar, and Mangalore from the Portuguese during 1653-54 after a lengthy war.
